I've read the sticky at the top of this section and I cannot go any higher than £240.

I've recently been looking for an upgrade and I've come across a 2014 Carrera Vengeance and a Carrera Valour, I don't have much knowledge in mountain bikes or bikes in general and have only been told to look for makes such as Specialized, Carrera, Trek, Boardman etc.

I'm looking for an MTB Hardtail as the Subway I have at the moment is breaking my wrists with no suspension in the front, I'm also looking for a 650B and the rest is pretty much unknown to me.

Here's the 2014 Carrera Vengeance: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/carrera-venge ... 3f49287c05

Here's the Carrera Valour: http://www.gumtree.com/p/bicycles/carre ... 1105329320

Any advice? I try not to go to Halfords otherwise I end being told about their amazing Apollo bikes.

Bad advice, at this price point anything new is lousy value, used are overpriced.

What usage will you be putting the bikes to?

For proper mountain biking I'd look for a good used Carrera Fury or Kraken - there are others but they are less common and harder to find, it needs damped forks and ideally hydraulic disc brakes.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
