Di2 cable routing/protection in the BB

I am in the middle of installing my first ever Ultegra Di2 and the bike I have has a BB86 BB. I am running a Rotor crank with the Rotor 4130 BB.

In the dealer manual it says you should route the wires over the inner cover. Is this because it assumes you are running a Shimano BB. The Rotor has no shell or cover. Does anyone foresee any issues of just installing it and running it over the spindle, or do I need to put something in? Thanks

The rotating axle will chaff the wires, so yes you do need a protective shell between that and the wiring.

You could find someone who is replacing a BB and nick the one off that, trimming as necessary, or just fashion one out of a plastic bottle. It doesn't need to be a precision fit.

But it does need not to rotate with the spindle, so need fixing somehow. My take would be to route the cables under the spindle (the opposite of the Shimano instructions - but they assume a tube anyway, as in my Hope PF BB96 bottom bracket) and maybe use a bit of gaffer tape internally to the frame to keep them in place. And make sure you use something (like cable ties) to stop the cables slipping down the down- and seat-tubes. And plenty of spare to allow battery removal without disturbance if using the internal battery.

As long as it is larger than the spindle and close to the ID of the shell it won't.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone, in the end I ended up using a cable tie on the bottom of the BB - What do you think? Wrapped the box first and used ties to help stop rattling etc as well

Looks fine. i covered mine with some cardboard. :)
  • It baffles me why Scott produce Di2 specific frames (Addict and Foil), yet leave a hole in the seat tube at the BB junction end about 3mm diameter! OMG how un-necessarily long has it taken me to thread that bastardo E-Wire down the seat tube and thru the tiny hole! Oh, and as Im using iternal battery in seat tube, no I cant thread it from the BB end first as the seat-tube needs to be in the frame to enable the E-Wire to reach!

    Rant over.
