What size tyres can I use on my rims

I am new to MTB and I have just bought a 29 er with 20 rims and 37 mm tyres on it, can I put 50 mm on them?
Some sites say I can others say don't do it, I am looking at continental travel contact.

what is the internal width?
19mm will take 2.35 safely but it all depends on the tyre. some are bigger than others0 -
The rims are DT Swiss tk540 and there is a label on them that says 622 x 19 so I assume that the latter is the internal width? So 2.35 is just short of 60mm so I should be ok then?
