How would this do for some casual off road forest rides in summer as well as some city riding?

Hardtail for sure, you'll get better components for the money and a hardtail will be a lot lighter/easier to pedal.0

Those Rockriders are heavy as he'll, not bad given the price point, but a hardtail will be a much nicer ride especially on the types of surfaces you mention when rear suspension isn't needed at all.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
