How would this do for some casual off road forest rides in summer as well as some city riding?

Or should i consider a hairtail?

Hardtail for sure, you'll get better components for the money and a hardtail will be a lot lighter/easier to pedal.

Those Rockriders are heavy as he'll, not bad given the price point, but a hardtail will be a much nicer ride especially on the types of surfaces you mention when rear suspension isn't needed at all.
