Vienna: anyone know the area?

I'll be moving this year and Vienna is on my list of possible new homes. Anyone know if there are decent climbs not too far away? I don't want to live somewhere flat (for cycling purposes). Salzburg is another option and the surrounding area is mountain paradise.

My wife is Austrian, and we lived in St. Pölten for many years. To the south and west you have Wiener Wald with lots of good riding. Plenty of good mountainous routes close by. Salzburg is much more climbing focused though! I went to the Vorschule in Salzburg, and I've always considered it my second home. The riding is much better in Salzburg, especially with Tirol next door, opening up the alps.
Just out of curiosity, have you visited Vienna before, and do you speak German? Is there a reason why you've chosen Austria?0 -

I should've just PMed you in the first place
Yes, my German is fluent. Lived in Passau on the Austrian border for years but for some reason never went to Vienna. I'll be doing a job which I can do from home so I'm pretty much free to move anywhere.
I love Austria. Find the people more relaxed than the Germans and always enjoyed any time I spent there. Used to ride there most days. I'd chose Salzburg for purely cycling reasons but I want to live in a big city again and preferably a city with nearby hills.
The mountains aren't too far away are they? An hour's drive to the south? Any info gratefully received!0
