Shimano chain install - rivet position

So apparently Shimano recommends when installing one of their chains ensure the rivet is on the left of the plate when the chain link is at the bottom of the drive train before it reaches the rear mech.

I've read this after installing a new chain and sods law having a 50/50 chance I've connected the rivet on the right of the plate and don't have another rivet.

Is this likely to cause an issue with the chain breaking?

Not with the chain breaking, but I had one where the protruding nose of the rivet caused the chain to be occasionally pushed down to the next ring on the cassette. Usually at the most inopportune moment. Like you I didn't have another pin so Mr Dremel fixed it by grinding it down enough to not cause the downshifting.

Ah ok thanks, I'll keep an eye out for that happening. Might see if I can pick up some replacement pins.

I resolved my lack of Shimano pins by acquiring a handful of KMC PowerLinks from eBlag - they're incredibly reasonable there compared to the street price (£3 for 2 links delivered top whack - here as an example http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281480461451)

+1 for KMC quick links, they are the dogs round bits.
