Tyres

Hi

I currently have a winter/commuter bike and I have handbuilt wheels (open pros with 105 hubs) with 25mm GP 4 seasons on them. I find these to be pretty good tyres and my main aim is puncture resistance on the commute (I have also had gatorskin hardshells in the past and they were good also). So happy with either four seasons or hardshells as winter/commuter tyres

I also have a Roubaix which has stock tyres on it (Specialized Espoir Sport, double BlackBelt, 60TPI, wire bead, 700x25c). This is MAINLY a dry weather bike but if I'm doing a very hilly ride, or a sportive, I will take it out in the wet also. I went out today on it and the tyres didn't grip well on the wet roads (although I can't fault their puncture resistance). I also sense that their rolling resistance isn't quite as good as the four seasons.

Weekends rides on both bikes involve roads in Kent (Toys Hill, Ide Hill and Brasted) and the road surfaces are pretty awful regardless of time of year (pot holes, cracks in roads and uneven surfaces). So I need a tyre with some reasonable puncture protection.

My question is recommendations for tyres for the Roubaix given the above usage. Would four seasons be the answer as that seems to be an all year round tyre? Or what about GP 4000s? Would the latter have enough puncture resistance or are they likely to puncture a lot more frequently?

    Hi feisty,

I ride the Roubaix and found the stock tyres to be awful, even in the summer, punctures all the time. I did use the 4000 II GP in summer and found these to me real good, but any sign of rain they seemed to puncture as well, great tyre, but to be honest I have taken to riding the GP 4 Seasons all year round, good tyre with fantastic puncture proof, I'm 110kg so not light, will depend on tyre pressure as well, giving you something else to think about.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers Jahmoo

I'm 65kg and I run all my tyres at 100psi which is probably more than I need to. What width 4 seasons do you go for? 25mm?

Wondering about 28mm in wet on both Roubaix and commuter.

    Funny you ask what width...

I've had a bad accident this winter, not been on the bike for 7 weeks now, ok, not outdoors, just started on indoor trainer, but was thinking the same thing for next winter, running 28mm, as had no probs on my Hybrid running 28's in the winter.

I normally run 25mm on my Roubaix and will for the summer, when I finally get out there.

    I normally run 90-95psi, but then I heavy ;)
