not so smooth when on large chainring

Ever since I got my new bike, it's more than a year old now, this has annoyed me a bit, finally getting round to thinking of fixing it / asking about it: When on the large chainring it's just no where near as smooth as when on the small chainring. And when I'm on say the 3rd largest gear at the rear, I look down at the rear derailleur and the chain, they're decidedly not in line with each other. The derailleur is visually rotated a bit anti-clockwise in relation to the chain. Is that normal or not?; Should it appear inline in that situation? I don't know if that's the source of the extra noise or not but it's a fair chance I think. Would that be a bent hanger? Or what? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Sounds like a bent hanger right enough only evident in certain gears

The mech should be parallel to the large chainring. The first thing to check is whether it's been fitted slightly askew. If it was a bent hanger your indexing would be out.
