I've finally decided to service my pedals but run into serious problems. I purchased the correct tool for undoing the collar and made sure that i turned the pedal in the correct direction to undo it making sure i wasn't tightening it. After a couple of turns it went loose but as i keep turning it the axle just spins and doesn't come out? Its doing it on both pedals so I've really managed to balls it up twice

I'd checked all the videos before i started. Looks like i've threaded them. Time for some new pedals.

Are you holding the pedal body stationary while unscrewing the axle out of the body? There are direction arrows on the plastic tool that show you which direction to turn for the R & L pedal axle. Or are you saying that you have overtightened them the opposite way and stripped the threads?

I checked and double checked before i started turning that it was the right way. The axle is spinning but the small collar that the tool fits over now moves freely 2 - 3mm along the axle shaft. Annoying thing is that there wasn't anything wrong with them in the first place.

What model pedal is it? Have you tried applying pressure to the pedal body, in the opporsite direction as you turn the tool?

Shimano R550's. I will have another look in the morning but not feeling confident.

Does anyone know if the small nut is supposed to move independently to the axle or is it all one part?

    Cheers

That is strange, never experienced that happening when I strip my MTB spd pedals. If you look at the EV-PD-R550-3555.pdf from the page linked here http://si.shimano.com/#categories/148 you can see how the axle lock bolt is situated on the axle.

Looks like the nut has sheared off where it meets the pedal housing. I used the pedal tool in the vice method without pretreating the pedals with WD40. It's the first time I've serviced them since I've had them which is about a year. I'm 99% sure I turned it the right way but strange how it's both pedals. Good excuse to buy some new pedals I suppose!

Just had another look, in the cold light of day, and have now realised i have twisted them the wrong way.
Obviously with it being in the vice everything is arse about face.

Very annoyed as i had seen all the tutorials so already knew to check for this - muppet!

This is what happens when i don't drink on a Friday night
