Garmin 500 & 1000 question?

Hi guys, I'm currently running a 500 and looking at the idea of getting a 1000 too, do they run the same sensors? I've noticed from some photos etc on the net that they look a little different but I'm looking to keep the 500 and wondered if both units would work off the others sensor so I could use either one on either bike if that makes sense?

Speed, cadence and HR sensors all definitely work. I upgraded from 500 to 1000 so can vouch.0
