If you had to get rid of one...

I am not riding as much as I used to and hope that I will get my mojo back at some point. I have three bikes in total these two and a full suspension mtb. Thinking of getting rid of one of the road bikes but cant decide which one. The Cinelli is a really nice ride and the Genesis is a jack of all trades. What would you do?

  • I always like having a jack of all trades bies that I can use for everything, but I don't do any racing. I do tend to err on the utilitarian side of things in life though, favouring practicality and affordability.

Personally I'd choose to keep the Cinelli as long as you're not regularly commuting on the Genisis etc.
My reasoning is you said it's great to ride and if you've lost some desire to get out and ride it won't help if you get rid of the really nice riding machine and left with the 'jack of all trades' that just might not spark your passion.

You can always get a pair of clip on mudguards/ ass saver if you're worried about poor weather, and there's no reason why you can't run a nice bike in adverse conditions- just the cost of replacement parts is going to be a little dearer (not that 10 speed chains/ cassettes are particularly expensive anymore though...)

Also I imagine it would be cheaper to buy another steel all rounder in the future rather than a nice cinnelli frame.

Hope you get back into it again soon! Are you a member of a local club? That usually helps fire up the motivation- company and club events are wonderful things.

Unless you need the money i'd hold off a few months if you can because if you refind your mojo again as the weather improves then you'll regret getting rid of whichever one you choose. If you get rid of the Genesis you'll miss the practicality and the guards, if you get rid of the Cinelli you'll miss the really nice ride that you describe!

So by keeping both you could end up saving money in the long run because you wont take a hit on depreciation then end up buying what you are missing further down the line. If by July you still haven't regained your passion then reappraise things - it will by then be the middle of summer and the Tour de France will be on so you might find it sells a bit easier too.

I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

The cinelli- its the one that you describe as a really nice ride. You are much more likely to get your mojo back riding a bike you enjoy!
    RIP commute...

THe Cinelli has much better wheels, hence it wins on all fronts...

The Cinelli definitely, it looks a right pile of crap.

Tell you what, I'll do you a favour and take it off your hands. I'll even pay you the £25 scrap value.

Done that far too many times in the past and have learnt the hard way...

What ever happens the wheels will stay in the garage for now.

erm, unless I'm very much mistaken, losing your bike mojo means that it is time to buy ANOTHER bike, not get rid of one.
