After getting wet/borderline cold whilst racing at the w'end I'm thinking that the Rapha softshell baselayer might be a handy bit of kit. Anyone got one?

I dont like racing in a rain cape so it might be a good alternative....

I've tried one on and it does feel quite interesting. To be honest, I'd buy a short sleeve neoprene base layer first from decathlon as I reckon it'd do the same job, although you'd need a winter one as neoprene isn't remotely windproof

With out sounding to weird, what else did you wear on your top? A long sleeve jersey jacket etc??

Got one here but got knocked off the bike so haven't had chance to test mine

I have one, and in some rain, but not a downpour, it is good, but a bit hot for most of the year. For the torrential weather, I have a Rapha rainjacket which is the best bit of kit I have ever bought.

    Thanks for the replies.

So its good but too hot by the sounds of it. Say this time of year 6-10 degrees with just a jersey over the top, too warm??

Im torn between trying this and getting a s/s Craft baselayer with a Gore Windstopper front panel.

I think the idea is that it gets wet but keeps you warm like a wetsuit. I think the idea is you can wear your club tshirt over the top or layer up as appropriate. If you are working hard in a race or training ride then it should be useful. If your pottering then a raincoat may be more useful.

I'll give it a whirl. Might also come in handy for Paris-Roubaix challenge next week :)

Have a look at the Parentini Mossa. It's a weather proof jacket like the Gabba but can be printed in club or race team colours

Ive just got back from a ride in the soft-shell base layer and its been great, about 10deg and drizzly (a light shower too)

I felt perfect in it. i got a little hot when i exerted myself on a 8 minute climb but apart from that it was great.

I also wore the pro team arm warmers which compliment the base layer well and the pro team overshoes were good too....

I've used it in last 3 races, it really came into it's own today, it was a wet, pretty cold, 2hrs. What a fantastic bit of kit!

Awesome piece of kit, I used it with the matching arms in 2 degree C hailstone & gale force winds this week, with just a longe sleeve jeresy over the top, I never felt cold and after the rain etc stopped the wind dried the top out.

    Highly recommended.

Great bit of kit, rode 80 miles today in the Mossa plus base layer, light rain including a nice climb up "the tumble" which was 50 miles in and I was dry inside and out. (Well maybe a little warm at the top :D )

Can it be worn as a base layer?

I'm doing this ride and I'm not sure this is something I would want to wear all day unless it was guaranteed to be pouring down all day. The forecast is looking good at the moment so removable layers might be a better option to cope with the cold in the morning.

The OP complained of wearing a rain cape when racing. All I'm saying is there's an alternative to race in the rain, other than buying a softshell baselayer.
