I selflessly did a test today and can confirm the answer is that today was too windy.
Have had today pencilled in for a long ride for a number of weeks due to it being a rare day off with no family around.
When I awoke this morning, things were considerably calmer than they had been and the nice lady on the TV the winds would be easing during the day. But chucking it down at lunchtime.
Lanes were terrible with debris washed into them and huge puddles concealing some highly dubious road surfaces. Wind just got stronger and stronger as I rode. 55 very slow miles and some very dodgy moments including a wind induced speed wobble on a downhill motorway bridge.
Broke a spoke too through ham fistedness. Glad it didn't chuck it down as after stopping to sort spoke and re-balance wheel I was properly cold.
Good test of mental fortitude but doubt I'll repeat in a hurry.0 -
Well yesterday was too windy in my opinion.
I came to this scientific conclusion after I was suddenly blown 3 ft sideways towards a kerb, all happened in slow motion, i was not going quick enough to hop on the kerb yet too fast to unclip my foot.
Anyway fall over and looked around, luckily nobody saw me, the nearest cars were about 300 yards behind and when they passed no beeping of horns or laughing. Quickly checked my bike then checked my long bibs, no damage so only pride took a battering.
Also go battered by hailstones ten minutes later. Not my best of commutes.0
