Any tyre recommendations?

I'm looking to replace my tyres and I'd be grateful for suggestions?

I currently use Specialised Roubaix pro's and I've found them to be fine but I lack informed knowledge of what other options are out there? The bike is used throughout the year and my riding consists mainly of social rides with the occasional sportive.

Thanks in advance

  • There's a whole bunch of options out there, but here's a good place to start:

    Schwalbe One
    Continental GP4000S II
    Continental 4 Season
    Vittoria Open Corsa CX/Pave
Vredestein Fortezza Senso All Weather (previously called Vredestein Fortezza TriComp)
    Michelin Pro4 Race/Endurance
    Kenda Kaliente Pro
    Bontrager R3
    Veloflex Corsa

At the end of the day, there's not much to pick between them and they're all very good tyres.

There are loads and loads of threads on this topic, and you'll surely have people offering the hugely expensive Vittoria offerings and the perennial Conti 4000s and 4 seasons.

From what I've heard of the Roubaix Pros they seem to be fairly reasonable winter rubber.

I've used Gatorskins for a long time as training/ winter tyres- these are also OK and probably feel slightly worse than your current tyres, but probably much more durable.

Conti 4000s are good tyres- reasonably light, I find they have reasonable puncture protection when used in the better months of the year, and also grip well, they were my first 'confidence inspiring' tyres and I still use them for road racing.

I also have shwalbe Ultremos which have simillar grip to the 4000s but a little lighter (and cheaper) and feel nice with thin tubes in. I haven't used them enough to comment about wet grip or durability, but first impressions are good.

Michelin Pro 4 endurance: I bought 25C versions a couple of months ago to replace my battered Gatorskins (I fancied a change after 4 years of Gatorskins) and using them for winter/ general riding. They seem to come up large for 25C tyres, and have good grip in all conditions, although not quite the levels of the race tyres. The comfort is reasonable as well, although it certainly wasn't a revelation compared to the 110psi 23C gatorskins (I run the Michelins at 90psi)

I've also used Vittoria Rubino pro slick tyres- these are OK with about the same grip as the Gatorskins and seem to have reasonable puncture protection, but I use them as spare training tyres as they seem fairly unremarkable in most aspects but then they are cheap.

Of all of them for Sportive/ summer club run use I'd go for Schwalbe Ultremos for performance at reasonable cost. I would suggest the Conti 4000s but they are a little pricey now. Michelin Pro 4s are worth a look too- although the endurance models might not feel so much different to your current tyres as an upgrade.

That's all of my experience with tyres- I'm sure loads more people will inundate you with suggestions! Have fun :)

That's all my experience with road tyres- I'm sure lots of others will chip in!

For a good all year round balance of durability/ grip/ feel I'd suggest:

    Conti 4 Seasons
Michelin Pro 4 Service Course (Endurance for greater longevity)
    Schwalbe Durano Plus

There are loads of others on the market place but that's my short list to suit your stated riding needs from the info provided.

  • I would have said go for the Vredestien's mentioned in the second post. But mine have started to split considerably after less than 150 miles. Very disappointing because they are a lovely ride :(

Agree with much of the above although don't like Conti Gatorskins - found them too slippery in the wet. I keep going back to Michelin Pro Race 4s myslef (with the endurance version for winter). Great tyres & good value. Lots of good options out there.
