I am doing my first overseas trip where I am hiring my road bike. I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendation for good insurance providers that cover personal injury, theft - theft of bike for example etc.

There are a number of levels of cover.

For 3rd party cover you can join CTC or BC. I would recommend this for riding in this country not just abroad.

There are a number of standard holiday insurances that include cycling and cover you for personal injury and hospital fees. My last insurance was with Coverwise. Just do a search on a comparison website decide if you want single or multi trip and check the terms and conditions.

Damage to the bike: Check with the hire place. I go to Majorca and it's 10 Euros for the week. This covers damage if the bike is crashed or damaged in any way.

Theft: I've never bothered. If I'm riding I don't let it out of my sight at night it's locked in the hotel cellar and also locked to other bikes.

It a gamble but it's paid off. I can do a £10K worth of damage if hit a very expense car or injured someone and the CTC cost is about £30 a year. If I need to go to hospital the fees could be thousands and the insurance premium is ~ £30 - 40 for a year multi-trip. If I write off the bike by crashing it that's about 1000 euros and the cover is 10 euros. For theft it's still 1000 euros but the premium seems to be the order of £100. If I had taken out theft insurance I could have bought the hire bike (and my touring bike) for the number of times I've ridden abroad.

This is my own experience others may feel differently.

CTC does holiday insurance with proper cover for cycling and you don't have to be a member to take it out. Be aware that many holiday insurances will not cover cycling if it's the main activity of the holiday.

Check World wide insure, I use them for Off piste skiing without a guide, so they do the sport spectrum at a reasonable rate.

Trailfinders are ok, they don't worry that you're cycling - tho tell them up front of course.

I've always used Snowcard for road and MTB trips to Spain, not had to claim from them but they have a good rep from those that have. Not sure about the rented bike insurance though, as suggested by a previous poster you might be better off doing that with the place you hire it from.
