Transporting bike within UK

My wife and I are planning on doing a 3 day trip, hubbing out from Somerset in May.
The plan is to travel down by 2 seater, so no space for the bikes.
Does anyone have any experience of getting bikes couriered to / from destinations in the UK, boxed or unboxed?

    Find a bike shop near your starting destination and ask them if they would be prepared to receive the bike for you (perhaps offer a small payment?). Then get a bike box from LBS at home, pack bike up organise courier and send it .
