SPD Release Tension

I have two pairs of SPD pedals - XT (which I use on my road bike) and M520 (on MTB) - both purchased this year, so not very old.
The M520 have a nice easy release, however, the XT (even with the tension on the lowest setting) require quite a twist to release.
Is there anything I can do to the XT pedals to try and make them release a little easier - anything I should check on them? I guess all Shimano pedals would have roughly the same release tension :?:

perhaps swap them. tighter would be better on the road over off road.
Going out for a ride shortly, so will see if it has made any difference.
