Getting Grease out of Clothes

I had a quick search on the site and forum but couldn't see anything.
Any thoughts or magical cures?

I use my road bike to commute a little as well and if I knock the chain or rings with my legs I get this thick pure black grease on my clothes that just won't come out (it's from a ceramic based lube). It's ruined my jeans now. I've tried a hot wash, cold wash, vanish foam straight on it. Nothing seems to work. There's teeth marks all around the one knee on my jeans and the inside of the right leg is just black from the chain.

Some how it's even ended up on my jersey back and arms!

I've had success getting chain oil out of a white jersey by soaking the area in Gunk Ultra engine degreaser, leaving it 10 minutes then putting it on a normal wash in the machine.

    Prevention is better than cure.

...and with a 60 tooth chainring, you'd be asking about grease stains in your underpants...

Rock N Roll Miracle Red degreaser. Use it neat on such stains and it gets rid of them really well. I've used it several times.

Clean the chain, rings and cassette too.

Petrol and a scrubbing brush should do it. And if it doesnt just add fire and you wont have oily jeans anymore.

There are many ways to resolve the issue.

    1. wear cycling kit and take a change of clothes.
    2. just drive to work.
    3. quit the job and stay at home.
My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...
  • How are you getting oil from the chain on your knees? I commute mainly, and even when wearing a suit, simply tucking my trouser leg into my socks has meant i've never had an issue.

Fudgey, I own a company and work from home :) When I "commute", it's to pop into town to do the banking or post, it's about 2 miles away and takes 5 minutes so changing clothes isn't really an option :P I've deemed these jeans "cycle to town" jeans now and bought some others.

I'll take a photo tomorrow so you can see what I mean :)

MounatinMonster, the knee grease is from when I pick the bike up and turn it around of walk past it, if my leg taps the chainring - I have no idea how it gets on my elbows or back lol

I do have some chain degreaser, I'll give that a go tomorrow and see what it's like

    Fair enough!
I was not joking about using petrol tho!

Maybe a long sock, or trouser clip is just what you need, but i would deffo be cleaning the running gear too.

Chainset. I consider the chainset to be dirty at the moment, but, as you can see, it's not filthy. This is 2 rides (total 25 miles) after a full clean, degrease and re-lube
