    This is of course correct and should apply if some chopper rides into the back of you as he's tried to take a tow as you ride into work. However, if riding in a group as described I think everybody knows the score and these things don't apply. If somebody tried to enforce them I suspect they wouldn't be welcome in groups for much longer.

    it doesnt necessarily have to be a chaingang group ride though, sportives inevitably clump alot of people on bikes into similar ability groups who are maybe even less aware of the score or the ins and outs when riding together in groups, and might even be more likely to wipe each other out because they dont recognise the overlapped wheels or try and take fastest lines through corners, spot the obvious issues etc etc.
    Indeed. I did RideLondon last year. The weather didn't put me off, but the standard of some of the riding did. In contrast I rode the Ditchling Devil last year, much smaller event, longer and harder but much more pleasant.

    The thing with the RLS100 is that you have to get an early start, and you have to stay with the fast groups. If you bonk and fall back into the mass participation, it's mayhem. The fast groups are generally disciplined, experienced club riders IME. I speak, of course, from experience of bonking and failing to stay with the front pack...

    This is very true, I'm not that fast unfortunately. :oops:
    I had to laugh before the start I overheard some people chatting about how they were going to ride and one chap said "I think I'll ride it like a sportive." What does that mean? That he'll ride like more of a bellend?

    Re responsibility for taking out others, its a straightforward negligence issue. If you do something negligent and that causes damage to someone else then you are liable. I wouldn't say slipping on diesel was negligent (although riding 120PSI tubs at this time of year in a bunch might be!). You then have the issue of whether the other riders were contributorily negligent in riding so close that they had no chance to avoid you and/or whether they had willingly assumed the risk by riding in such close proximity. I think the OP would have had to be riding like a massive chopper to be at any risk of a claim.

    Re: compensation. I'm sure the whole group will let anyone looking for compensation know that compensation is not provided in these instances by smacking their face, in the face!

    Hi back! I came off on Whempstead Road, just after High Elms Lane, on the way into Benington in Herts.

    I might be out tomorrow, although I'm still feeling pretty battered, so if you see someone circulating slowly on an S5, don't shout "Too much bike, not enough man" until I'm safely out of earshot...

    £900? Was that just to replace the Rapha knee warmers, made from organic yak fur that's been farmed at a mountain top Himalayan monastery.

    On a serious note, if you slip on diesel surely you're not liable for any costs. It's not like the op was at fault.

    I think action by the OP against BP would be OTT. It's not down to the CEO or VP of BP it the OP had an RTC.

    FWIW IMHO, the GP at the A&E should file a report to the CEO of BP and the EWCA on behalf of the OP detailing the RTC and then maybe BP will cough up. BTW, the OP should post some pics or it's another case of POIDH.

    Actually, Rapha is the one bit that (hopefully) won't cost money, thanks to their repair service. The final tally was:
    Toe covers
    Knee warmers
    Bibs
    Jersey
    Mitts (these were *destroyed*, which makes me very grateful I was wearing them)
    Helmet (no visible damage, but I have a black eye, so I'm minded to retire it)
    RH shifter (wrecked)
    LH shifter (badly marked)
    Bars (snapped)
    Bar tape
    RD
    Saddle

    Quite a bit more than £900, in the end. Sad habit of blinging up my bike not helping, of course. Still, I have to compensate for my weak legs somehow.

    ...and the frame is being X-rayed next week, given that I snapped a set of SLC2s: I need reassurance that the steerer is OK.

    It could still turn out to be an even more expensive weekend.
