You just have to laugh. There is nothing to suggest that this lad has seen the film (currently impossible as it has not released beyond the cinemas), could have read the book (perhaps .... it wasn't questioned in the story) and you can't argue with the mother's defence.

The film is available on the internet, so he could have seen it.

He is eleven years old, he would not have read the entire book, only the dog eared pages :D

The mother was on Radio 5 Live discussing it. She said that the school asked him to ditch the accessories (cable ties) and that as he was dressed in a nice smart suit he should be James Bond!! The womaniser and hired killer.
Quite remarkable what we think is acceptable in today's society.
The mother is a primary school teacher. And whilst acknowledging that her son is at secondary school. I am sure she would know that it would have been deemed inappropriate. But hey ho. Made me laugh.

  • Sex is a part of every day life, and people need to stop trying to hide it. I'm with other people on this in the fact that I would much rather have someone dressed up as Mr. Grey than some person hired to kill. That is atrocious to recommend that.

It's always illuminating, I find, to 'invert' these situations. So, how about an 11-year-old girl going as Lolita?

i know when i was 11, i was into cycling, m/c s and fishing..... and I dont think Christian is into just "sex"

Doesnt the book glorify violence and control over women? even if it does have a happier ending, 2 women are killed every week as a result of domestic violence.
i know a couple of female friends who have been victims of domestic violence and they cannot believe that such a really badly written book has made the author a fortune, let alone be turned into a film.

As said, a girl dressed as lolita might get a slightly different response.

Why is it presented as a choice, that just his mother's bizarre reasoning, can it not be that both are inappropriate?

I think the difference needs to be made clear between domestic violence, sexual dominance and S&M. For me, the biggest difference is some women WANT the S&M and the male to be dominant, and have a choice to do these activities because they enjoy it. If they didn't get aroused from it, they wouldn't do it. That is very different to domestic violence, which is inflicted on the woman regardless of how they feel about the subject.

Those are 2 very different types of activities.

Is it presented as a choice? I'm only using this example because it is referenced in the article. It could very well be that both are inappropriate, but I don't see Mr. Grey as being anywhere near as sinister as Mr. Bond.

I am a huge Bond fan though!

    I'd question his mothers judgement............and she's a teacher....

It must be another slow news day so I'm expecting to see what a scorching summer we are in for.

Christian uses manipulation and control to get get this woman under his thumb, so to speak, in exactly the same way a man uses the same before he starts hitting his wife/partner etc its not as if they start hitting their new partner on the first date.
its because of this women stay with violent partners, their self esteem is through the floor and they do whatever the man wants until they get the courage to take control and leave, though sometimes even that isnt enough - probably the same for men with violent partners.

Obviously some women want SM as do men, but 50 shades is about how he manipulates her into doing whatever he wants.

But whatever ones views on a rather complex subject, i don't think its age appropriate for an 11yo to be allowed to behave in such a manner.

    +1

I don't think James Bond is that bad anyway. I grew up watching James Bond, just as I grew up playing with toy soliders etc. I don't have any urges to kill/murder and I'm not a violent person whatsoever. I'm sure the same can be said for the majority of people.

I do think eleven is too young to be asking about tying up girls for sex however

What I meant wasn't that I get it every day, but it is part of being alive, and is completely normal. It's a shame to see so many people shunning, or still keeping the topic of sex taboo in this modern time. You would think we've moved on farther than to hide normal bodily processes.

This shows what a whole load of S**t this country has got itself into.
Whats appropriate . whats not appropriate , for Christ sake its going to be an offence to fancy some one soon.
We have all ended up a load of Mary Whitehouses , (Google her).
I want to ask you a question , what is left that is not offensive , inappropriate , or any other "ist" you can think of ?
Lets get some fun back into our lives .
The kids mam and the kid were having a bit of crack and want to applauded for trying to bring a bit of humor into this drab PC country that we have become.

James Bond regularly risks life and limb to save the world from nuclear terrorism, massive biological attacks, etc. He's a great role model for kids and without him we'd all be dead.

Anyway, children shouldn't be going to school dressed as porn characters. Why can't they be allowed to grow up a bit more slowly? What's the rush for them to become adults these days?
  • You have to ask yourself, is it really that bad, or inappropriate, if every single person in the room, including the students knew who was coming as, and it didn't bother them?

And ILoveGrace, i'm with you on that. I wouldn't want to offend someone who I have no reason to ever speak to.

So you suggest that the country has gone to s**t whilst at the same time saying that 11yr olds embracing masks and tying each other up during sex is just a bit of fun? Do you think there is any irony in there?

I'm amazed that his mother, a primary school teacher, has failed to notice that children mature at different ages. Primary school... woah there, too soon. Secondary school..ah fine, get the whips and handcuffs out. She's definitely not the brightest teacher out there.
