Hi,

I have picked up some very cheap Fulcrum Racing 3 wheels of a good friend ( not sure on year ) they are 8/9/10 compatible as far as i can work out.

Some may know my first road bike is a Carrera TDF and while I did not plan to upgrade this these wheels were beer tokens only so why not.

Problem is I am 7 speed :( . . . ( currently looking for some used 10 speed bargains to go 10 speed but thats another story )

Current bike runs a 7 speed free wheel 11/28 - I have tried looking online but cant makes sense of what i need to make this work.

So far i think i know i need a

- 7 speed hyper-glide Shimano cassette ( same ratio one assumes is best )

- Best practice to fit a new chain

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kmc-z7-7-speed- ... 116-links/

- then the information gets hazy . . i know i will need a spacer but places like wiggle say 3mm where as other sites say 4.5mm any idea which is true and if there is anything else needed or that i have missed.

These are the wheels in question if anyone knows year.

Have used a 7 speed cassette on a couple of Shimano 8/9/10 speed freehubs. Always used the 3mm spacer.

The correct size is 4.5mm for the spacer.

    4.5mm?? You sure?
Are you running a 7 speed cassette anywhere atm on an 8/9/10 freehub? if so, recommend you measure the spacer again.

OP- suggest you ignore advice saying 4.5mm!

I have just measured mine that IS fitted to a 8/9/10 freehub with a 7 speed cassette.

With a vernier gauge the spacer comes up at 3mm. I have run it like this for the past 2 years without issue and on another wheel previously.

Ha see what i mean :) so much confusion. Ha thanks for going out and measuring yours much appreciated. I shall order the 3mm one and pray it works well like yours.

Everything else seem ok. Limited for choice with chain and cassette but the links i posted get good reviews so happy days.

For clarification the freehub it is fitted to is from a Shimano RS10 wheel so nothing out of the ordinary.
I remember ordering a second spare spacer a while ago and though the website claimed it was 4.5mm I ordered it anyway and it turned out to be 3mm just like the other one.

I bet there's enough adjustment in the rear mech high & low stops to be able to set it up to run with either a 3mm or a 4.5mm spacer
  • Fitted the 7 speed cassette to mavic aksiym wheels.

Needed 5.5mm of spacers. In order to bring cassette far enough "out" to make lock ring work :) assume this is ok ?4F18F3CD-D77D-4434-95C6-6CCD457619E2_zpsqtdc3hgg.jpg
