Best MTB for under £350

Hi all,
Totally new to the forum, looking for some advice from people who know what they're talking about.
I'm looking at doing some biking around Europe this summer and I'm trying to do it on a modest budget, starting off with the bike. I used my mates Giant Roam 3 2015 to cycle from Glasgow to Edinburgh yesterday and it was pretty good but I'm looking for something which is more like a MTB than a Hybrid and can handle tougher and rougher tracks and trails plus some easy/moderate downhill runs if possible. May be able to stretch to £400 max but I'd prefer not to.
Any advice from you guys would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers
James

Unfortunately at that price you are buying a bike which isn't going to be particularly good off road. At your budget I would look for a used Specialized Rockhopper, Boardman HT or similar.
Not sure what you mean by downhill runs, if you mean xc trails which go down a hill then you will be fine. If you mean downhill trails as in big jumps, rock gardens and high speed, steep tracks then forget it unless you increase your budget by a lot.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
