Unusual rear wheel marking

Hi chaps,

Just recently noticed a strange issue with my rear wheel.

Looking at the pic, you'll see a deep scoring line which continues the whole way round the wheel, as though something sharp has been jammed against it whilst riding.

Any idea what could have caused this?

  • When the line has gone - the rim is worn out.

Presumably you mean the line on the 'v' section of the rim and not the brake track? If so, it looks like something may have been trapped between the stay and the rim (as you suggest) - either that, or your brake block on that side is seriously out of line.

Cant think of anything that would scratch that other unless something got stuck between the pad and rim and then dropped out.
  • Yes Imposter, the line on the V section.

Its not a brake pad issue, so no idea. Never had this before.

    Or chainstay and wheel?

I've sometimes found small stones stuck underneath the brake bridge, front and back.

You would have thought you've have heard it though!
