Centre's are fine, but like all of them, the side knobs cracked the first ride, then started tearing.

same problem here too, I run one at the back brand new, awsome grip the type that it really starts bothering you when you're kind of used to drift a bit, one run at a local trail, dusty, rocky and rooty conditions and looked much worse than this one :

took it back, replaced, then used it as a front tire and used a maxxis minion dhr2 at the rear,
Schwalbe after 2 runs was the same as the one I took back for replacement didn't bothered again, it's been 2 months now and some knobs fell off, going back to maxxis as soon as it needs replacement.

They're the regular vert star super gravity 27.5 magic Mary's. Perhaps I didn't phrase it quite as well as I could he's used them on his race wheelset all season so they've seen a far few flat out runs and he regularly top 20's and often podiums in expert category in the BDS, so he's no slouch. Either way I didn't think they were in that bad condition all things considered, no where near new but still useable for a while longer.

Moving on though, I'm quite liking my trailstar on the front, no ripped knobs so far!

Used to run the old muddy Mary in vert up front and trail at back ( I was a lot more aggressive then) and they were fine. maybe a bit fast wearing due to the soft compound but stickier than sticky the stick insect when he got stuck on a sticky bun..

Ordered a Fox EVOL air can on Thursday, should be here early next week so will try and get it fitted ASAP. Was thinking of just trying some volume spacers but reading more in the EVOL can it sounds like it increases progression and helps with small bump sensitivity so I'm going straight in with it. Gone for the non-kashima version as it was a fair bit cheaper as this is just an experiment, didn't work out much more than the volume spacer kit in the end!

Thinking about getting some new decals for the fork as I'll need some for the air can, he 2016 Fox ones look pretty trick so some in blue might be just the ticket. Slik have some listed and also have some for Easton Arc rims so will be nice to have it all matching :) once I've got the new wheelset I'm thinking I'll be done as far as real upgrades go, it rides so bloody well! have a few days holiday left so hopefully will get some quality time on her over the next month or so, can't wait!

Good move on the EVOL can. That would be my choice over the alternatives too. You can tune the size of the negative air spring to get the feel you want too.

If it increases the suppleness as its meant to it'll be a solid upgrade. The back end on the Foxy is good, super efficient, pretty plush, good mid-stroke but I do find it bottoms a little easy and on some trails it feels a little skittery. Maybe it's just me being a little too expectant of it, it just begs to be pushed so hard it kind of feels like it can't quite keep up and looses its smoothness over small bumps, so I'm hoping the EVOL can will improve it further.

EVOL can fitted and had a quick blat about some urban trails and side streets after work and it feels soooooooo much smoother than before! :D Perhaps I've stumbled upon a setup sweetspot or the can has just transformed the shock, but any small bumps are almost totally erased and on bigger impacts it ramps up nicely and even after some hefty landings it hasn't bottomed out yet, so things seem to be more progressive as well. Looks like it's done it says on the can

Off to the bike show Friday and then having thrash round Cannock on Sunday, should be a cracking long weekend :)
  • Hey dude, I have just managed to source one of these very bikes from Spain! So, I've been going through all the posts to see what are the right upgrades etc - I hope you don't mind?

I'm gonna bin off those Formulas for starters, I had some Formula The One's on an old Yeti, and never really gelled with them.

Do you have any advice or titbits for a new Foxy owner? I've been told by my LBS that it's worth having a set of pivot bearings ready as apparently they wear out quite quick?

Also, mine came with DT Swiss M1900 wheels instead of the Easton EA70's, think i'd have preferred the Eastons myself...
  • Very nice,... Lovin the colour scheme... I bet it flys... Well jealous!!! :P

No problem at all! Bearings are holding up well, but I've not done huge mileage on it due to long work hours, so with consistent use you may find they wear out a little quicker than mine, but of the few folks I know with Foxy's the bearings are holding up pretty well. They're pretty sorted bikes out of the box, I mainly just blinged mine up a bit with the carbon cranks/bar and changed things out to my preferences, so it's difficult to say where anyone in particular would gain from upgrades, if I had to say one thing it would be the drivetrain and saddle. New 11 speed XT is awesome and the stock saddle is awful, so these are the main things I'd look at changing to start off with.

Funnily enough I'd rather have the DT wheels! The Eastons are nice and look great, but the they are a little narrow for wider tyres and the freehub isn't the fastest to engage, but they have been bulletproof so far so I guess I can complain too much!
  • Yeah I'll be putting a Selle SMP on mine (only thing I get on with), got the new XT brakes to go on, and copied you with the Saint shifter!

Have you had any dramas with dropping chain? This is my first 1x setup, so don't know if it's an issue?

Also, I'm thinking of wrapping mine in invisiframe. Any thoughts on that?
  • All my bikes are wrapped in invisiframe, went and visited Lee and got him to do mine himself.. brilliant stuff cant recommend it enough!

Only dropped the chain once at Antur Stiniog, went way off line and bucked around like crazy, still not sure how I managed to ride that one out! I've never really found it an issue tbh, in over 3 years of running 1x drivetrains I've only dropped a chain 3 times on various different bikes, but for piece of mind there are some super light guides you can get, OneUp components do a nice one thatds dead simple to set up.

I've personally never bothered with invisiframe kits, I use helitape in a few places to stop cable rub etc but I've seen what the invisiframe kits look like after a year or so and they look crap IMO. Battle scars on a bike are character building anyway.
  • Mine all still look pretty solid after 2 years, far better than helli tape IMO.

Rad bike and cool thread. Really interesting to hear how the upgrades have panned out. Snap! We have the same stem :D

We have some other shared experiences - the M8000 shifiting is superb, so much better than the 10x I have on the Canyon. I'm also finding the Fox36 extremely harsh, what did you do to solve this in the end?

    Cheers :)

With the 36 it really is just a case of messing around of it until you find a setup that works for you. I eventually had another volume reducing spacer added and backed off the high speed compression, ran a lower air pressure and fewer low speed compression clicks and it feels noticeably better. I think at times though the harshness is just because the fork is so damn stiff. everyone bangs on about wanting the stiffest possible forks/wheel/frame/*insert component here*, I think sometimes things can be just too stiff and the 36 may fall into this category, a brilliant fork but for many riders it's probably overkill.

Now for sale, loved owning this bike but the time's come to move it to a new home. Fantastic bike but I hardly ride it any more (it's been used 3-4 times this year) so gone for something slightly more sensible and putting some funds into my new house.
