I have never seen anything quite like that before! How does it ride?

    The component choices look solid.

the build was just finished today by my riding partner, I want to take it to somewhere really scenic to take some proper shots of it first.. then I will let you know... not bad for a 11 year old frame :D
  • I very nearly bought that frame last year. Stunning stunning bike, IMHO one of the most beautiful ever made. Good luck with it :)
  • That is 11 years old :O

Wow, that must have been cutting edge back then, as it still looks the nuts!

Does anyone know their excuse for making the bottom bracket area look like that?
There must have been some Marketing excuse.

It was designed by Wilier for Marco Pantani for climbing the set back bottom bracket enabled them to shorten the wheelbase a little so it would climb faster , it worked as he then won the giro and the TDF in the same year on his yellow version of the bike , this frame was produced 2 years later in the clear lacquer and chrome decals , as far as I can make out (as I've googled it to death and found very little) this maybe the only one like this still around , but I could be completely wrong on that though
  • Great looking bike, think it was something other than the bottom bracket which helped Pantani though

An interesting bike but Pantani did the Giro-Tour double in 1998 on a Bianchi.

I did say I could be wrong :? I was trying to remember from what I read a few days ago , looks like my memory is going the same way as the rest of me lol

Afraid not, he won the TDF and Giro on his yellow and celeste Bianchi, see here:

He used the Wilier during his come back, circa 2002:

Still a damn cool bike though.

Love that, classy and blingy at the same time with some nice components. Are they Planet X calipers?

Yup , they are really good brakes as well, I would recommend to anyone, and they are light Planetx claim they are lighter than dura ace. Im just now on the lookout for a pair of ultegra shifters, to replace these 105s
it'll make the bike a tad lighter too
  • Really like this, but what is going on with that saddle position?
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

Because it's set forward? The reason being I haven't set it up yet

First ride out today on the new frame, all in all it seems really good, the set back BB wasn't noticeable at all, the only thing I did notice was that the front end is very light when riding at speed and the front was getting blown about a bit in the wind :?

Great looking bike, but some very strange angles going on, head tube looks so steep. Run the same PlanetX brakes on my Cervelo, they are a pain to centre plus no proper quick release when taking wheel out....very light tho!

Thanks for sharing your bike build, a genuinely interesting bike with some frame features I had never been aware of. An 11 year old frame!! really edgy design for that far back, I have the same SLK set up on my CX bike and prefer it to the K-Force on my good road bike.

Very well put together bike, hope you enjoy riding it.

It's not really a 'set back BB' though, it's a set forward seat tube! I assume the BB to seat anagle is normal and, it's the seat tube that is really angled. A bit ike an exagerated version of the TREKs of the same period.
Super cool bike though, thank you for posting; Great photos too.
