Will be starting my Equilibrium Disc build soon and have been mulling over wheelset options with the above budget. Looking most likely at handbuilt as I need a decent spoke count for my weight (usually varies between 85 and 90kg)

Obvious choice would be Archtype rims with Novatech 771/772 hubs. However I'm building with 105 5800 11 speed and I have seen Ugo comment that the 772 11 speed hub has an inferior design to the earlier hubs with more potential for failure.

I have seen these on offer and wondered if they might be a good alternative

They also have these at the same price in the sale

Not come across Moonglu before - anyone out there had experience of their habdbuilts?

Also suggestions for alternatives would be useful. Have already sourced some TRP Spyre disc brakes so looking at 6 bolt hubs rather than Shimano centrelock.u

Look at thecycleclinic.co.uk. Pacento SL25's on Novatech hubs. £340. I've ordered a pair.

Kinesis CXDISC v3, 1555g for a pair and technically a cyclo cross wheel. Standard fit on Kinesis Tripster ATR.

This chap has toured fairly heavily laden across Europe on his http://welovemountains.net/the-kinesis- ... -thoughts/

£269.99, I'm about to buy a second pair so I can easily switch between knobbly and slick tyres.
  • 1) HyRD is better than Spyre... I would fit an HyRD at least at the front. At the back fit what you find cheap... rear brakes don't do anything

    2) I still use the Novatec 772, it is OK, just not outstanding as the predecessor (when fitted with the recessed cap), but I'd like to find something better for 11 speed... not sure what is better in that price range... maybe worth investing more money for a Hope PRO 2? Problem is to buy it fitted for 11 speed, which is not straightforward, but possible, pretty sure Just Riding Along do this conversion in house. I'd say rear hubs are important and cause a good proportion of the grief you get from a bicycle, it is a good thing to spend some extra, if that buys you something better.

Ugo - the Moonglu wheels referred to above have Hope Pro Evo 2 hubs set up for 11 speed. Are these the ones you mean?

Still mulling over options but I must say I'm swaying towards the Moonglu wheels based on Archetyperims with Hope Pro 2 Evo hubs. Not initially planning to go tubeless but interested to know if anyone has successfully converted the Archetypes to run tubeless.

One other possibility I've come across is these from spokesmanwheels on Ebay

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Velocity-Aile ... 259afc41be

Only £5 more than the Archetype/Hope combo but these have Velocity Aileron rims with Novatech hubs.

Any experience out there of spokesmanwheels? His Ebay feedback is 100% so that helps a bit.

Any comments on which might be the better option or are they pretty well matched?
  • If you want to go tubeless, then choose a tubeless rim, like Velocity Aileron.

If you don't want to go tubeless, then choose a cheaper non tubeless rim. I would advise against trying to get two pigeons with one stone, at last as your first step in the world of tubeless.

Spokesmanwheel... he is not Mark Pollard? He's a good guy and a good builder, AFAIK

Yes Ugo - it is Mark Pollard as you guessed. So hopefully a vote of confidence

Obviously Ebay charges a fee, so maybe worth speaking to him directly, as you should be able to get a better deal than the one on Ebay...

Ebay is for the lazy...

He does offer a 6% discount if you go direct so worth exploring further.
  • I am also thinking of buying the same wheels, is it work upgrading the spokes to the CX Rays?

I currently have Fulcrum sport disk on my bike which weight 1860grams and I was wanting to get some weight of the bike by changing the wheels. Any other suggestions around the £300 to £400 (82kg rider for a CX bike that is used for racing and general on/off road)
  • I'd be interested to see, just for interest, how good the Fulcrum Disc are. On the face of it, at 1800 odd grammes, they seem to be a slightly better option as a cheap usable model than the comparable Mavic. I wonder why Fulcrum are currently keeping them as OEM.

Surprised there isn't more interest in the Kinesis wheels.

Not sure I'd want to pay £50 extra to save 40gms unless there are other benefits for the CX-Ray over the standard spokes offered.

Archetypes "convert" easily to tubeless, I've just done that. The Pacenti SL25's I mentioned are tubeless rims.

Shimano do a good hub too the CX 75 which everyone seems to forget about. 28 spoke only though which for many is enough but not all.

That's because the OP made clear he wants 6 bolts hubs...

I run Archetypes on Pro2EVO on two bikes and they are a good, tough setup. They also set up tubeless fairly easily as long as you run 25+mm tyres (23s are too skinny, and with wider 29er tyres I needed a rimstrip).

If I was getting a new set I'd look at the Pacenti SL25 rim, which are a tad lighter, and again probably on Hopes.

  • I have two sets of Spokesman/Mark Pollard wheels. Velocity A23 on Miche Primato on my road bike and H Plus Son Todestreib on Novatech on my 29er. In both cases I've had good dialogue with Mark about my needs and he's "prescribed" and delivered wheels that have been absolutely excellent.

  • +1 for Marks wheels I have a set comprising of 38mm deep carbonal tub rims (with Schwalbe One tubs) on Novatec disc hubs on my Sabbath and they are lovely.
