im currently using shimano rs10 wheels, so is it worth getting some rs81 c24 or ultegra 6800 wheels, will they roll faster then the rs10, the weight of the 3 wheelsets are approx rs10, 1892 g rs81 c24, 1502g and ultegra 6800, 1640g.

fwiw I swapped out RS10s for some handbuilt miche/kinlin/race and the difference was night and day. Not a particularly light build, but they are rugged and ride well.
  • Yes! I currently run RS10 wheels for the winter and RS80 (same as RS81 but 10 speed) for the summer and they do make a noticeable difference mostly in terms of how quickly they spin up and how easy it is to keep them rolling.

The RS81s are indeed a worthwhile upgrade.

I did the RS10 to RS80 change a few years ago and was amazed at the difference.

For the price you may as well get the ultegra wheelset. Once you add rim tape to the RS80 there is only 50g per wheel difference.
The ultegras don't need rim tape and are £100 cheaper.

RS80's don't need rim tape. They come with the tape already glued to the rim. There's also the carbon rim which does make a difference in the ride quality compared with the RS10.

The RS80/81 is a lovely wheelset IMO when matched with decent 25mm tyres. When mine went to the skip after the rims wore out I replaced with Campag Zondas, which were only about £260 and offer similar weight and bearing (cup/cone) performance. I kind of wish I had saved some more cash and picked the RS81s instead as the Zondas are nice, light and roll well (all that kind of stuff) but just feel harsh and brittle in comparison to the more plush/quality ride offered by the Shimano's. I am not sure how much of that is down to the carbon wrapping but, IMO, something definitely makes a difference in the ride experience.

Oh, not sure I buy into xx wheelset is that much faster for most wheels. I have just had to dump my winter wheels due to wear: RS30s. They cost £115 for the pair and were heavy, sluggish and dull in comparison to a lot of sprightly climbing wheels...set some of my best climbing PBs on them :?

I've little doubt that if I did a back to back test on my RS10 and RS80 there would be very little difference between my times on either. Things like temperature, wind, food etc would probably make a bigger difference. But I know which ones would be more fun!

haha, yes but you don't need to buy it separately or anything but sure, the Ultegra wheels are tubeless compatible which might be a consideration.
