Anyone know if you can get these hubs in Blue or Red? Seen images of them but the only ones in stock are black and I want to pimp my ride!

  • You can probably find the older 711/712 on Ebay in red... if you don't need 11 speed they are better hubs IMO. The new axle and end cap design of the rear 772 means bearings life is significantly reduced and drag is increased. I am starting to look around for alternatives with a comparable distribution network.

  • Alternatively, you can look at our friend Superstarcomponents hubs

Look like Novatec with old 8-10 speed free hub and NDS cap and new axle.. could be best of both worlds (as well as not)... the colour range is pretty

Have you has problems witht he bearing then Ugo as I have not yet. Bearings are the same size. Currently riding two sets on my mtb and road bikes without bother. Red or blue hubs are generally of eBay from the far east.

  • yes. More drag and shorter bearing life than the older ones. Probably the two are related. The axle is no longer flanged and that might be the issue

I have not had the drag issue myself. My two personal sets spin quite freely And as freely that the 711 and 712 hubs which novatec still sell actually. Time will tell with regards to bearing life but so far so good. Is the front or rear hub you are having issue with.

Only the rear... the front ones are fine. The best I had were the 712 from Taiwan with the smaller and recessed NDS cap... they had the least drag and were the longest living. Bender has a set of those sourced on Ebay with 12 K miles in all weathers (and probably no service)... those were really good... from then it's been a bit downhill.

Had a look at the Planet X Chosen hubs... look good, but the bearings are very small, not sure if they can be durable. However, most of the times is down to tolerances of the axle/shell, rather than the bearing per se. When the load is not spread well, the balls wear very rapidly...

My 542 Hub also is a bearing eater... lovely hub, but in one year I've had to replace 4 bearings and I service it exceedingly. No rust, they all wore... I think it's the new axle design
