I am currently looking at buying a new bike and looking at the two above. The giant is the 2015 model with the new 105 11 speed groupset, and the Merida is the 2014 model with last years 105 groupset. Any thoughts on the above or any other suggestions. Thanks.

  • i have just looked at a number of endurance bikes including the Defy. first thing is go ride them, groupsets etc can be replaced. I decided i wanted disc brakes because i do a lot of mountain biking and they are more consistent.

when i tried the bikes i was surprised at how different they felt and i think this is simply down to personal preference. The Defy is a great bike but in the end i went for a synapse simply because i got on it and it felt right straight from the start. Sorry i don't know much about the Merida. as for other suggestions...Synapse is well worth a look and i would suggest trek and scott also have good offerings....there are many brands to choose from.

  • Thanks for that how have you found the disc break on the synapse? As do prefer the internal routing of the cables on that than the giant.

The Scultura in size 54 can be had for £635 at Winstanleys if that helps.
  • Disc brakes are fine once bedded in...road discs are not as aggressive as mtb 's because you simply don't have the traction. they still offer great modulation however.
