Change house insurer. I have one bike covered for £4k and one for £2k with little effect on the premium. Cover includes accidental damage when away from the house and crash damage where nobody else is at fault.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
  • where are you mate and are you paying any extra on top of your usual house insurance for it or is it all in with the bikes quoted as specific items of value?
what insurance co. are you with?
    cheers

East Midlands. No hike in premiums for the bikes. Less than £400 per year with John Lewis'.

But that is still cheaper than the monthly quotes he's had from specific cycle insurers?

  • no, he's only gone to his house insurance at the mo for quotes, hence me coming on here to search for info and cycle insurance companies. I've passed a few details on eg CTC/BC/bikeline so we'll see how he gets on
  • I've just got my new bike added to the house insurance with full accidental cover based on bike cost of £1500 - cost me £2 extra per month. That's with Aviva

Why would you pay that when it can cost nothing to add it to your house insurance?

If you have an expensive bike then many house insurers won't add a bike without charging a crazy premium. I had a nightmare trying to insure my Dogma. Specialists can work out far cheaper. Most of the home insurers I spoke to would only cover bikes worth up to £1500.

I have expensive bikes. For named bikes up to £2,500 there is no hike in premiums. Bikes over that carry a premium that is way less than what so called specialists in cycle insurance charge. Christ, I could insure my Yamaha R1 FC on a daytime MOT for less than bike insurers charge to cover a pedal cycle.

Really? I had a total nightmare ensuring my Dogma2. All in that was about £10,000 of bike new. Find me a household insurer that will cover that for a sensible price... oh and cover it abroad etc (made worse by the fact that I live in London).
  • I've added my cervelo for 5k on home insurance with AA for an extra 12.80 a year and that included accidental damage and worldwide cover
  • some good points being made
it appears that the insurance co. is either very bike friendly (low or little charges) or anti bike (charge the F****n earth) to cover your pride and joy
my mate's in the latter one hence me trying to find a decent insurer for him. I forgot to add that he races it too (TT/triathlons etc) has that been a factor for any of you?
  • You need to look at not just the premium but will they pay out if he needs to claim. Lots have bad reputations regarding this.
Get your friend to research this as well, all the information is there.

Adding to Home insurance not an option for me, does anyone know a 'good' company that will insure high value bikes at a reasonable price?
  • No as mine are on the house insurance, but a word of warning, don't go with Cycleguard because they will not pay out.
  • Mate of mine recently had an incident with a bike coming off a roof rack and esure home insurance paid out to replace the frame without any fuss at all.
  • well, me mate's had no luck at all....even the specialists don't want to know. He's on a Giant tt bike and can't get anything under £25pm

for those saying they have got 5K bikes insured for next to nothing, please let me know who the insurers are

Hey mate. I've PM'd you my insurance guy's details. Currently have 25k of bikes insured for everything from worldwide travel, race, etc. for much less than any cycle specific company would do (and I have one claim).

Trying to insure a bike whilst renting in a shared house leaves very few options.
  • I got home insurance with AA and have added my Cervelo as a specific item with worldwide accidental damage, for 5k and it was about £12ish extra on the premium.
  • Grill/rudivoller....cheers, have passed your answers onto my mate

Grill........tried pm'ing you back.....don't know if it worked but cheers I've passed broker details on
