Shortly going to be taking and ultegra di2 groupset off one bike and transferring it to a different frame. How much would I get charged on average at an lbs. I'm not too good at fettling side so want job done properly.

A Mobile mechanic just quoted my mate £54 to swap Di2 from one frame to another.

It might be more than what you'd expect as a 'flat hourly rate'.
Primarily because the LBS has to be concerned about such things as, any part breakage during the swap, any return-calls that you come back with about problems or adjustments, etc.

My LBS quoted me £50 a couple of years ago. So I did it myself.
  • I had a bike built up for me a couple of months ago, got 2 quotes at £90 and £100 for a full build.
  • I use a local fella who advertises in local mags etc..

He is rather excellent at bike building etc…look in your local small ads , he built me a complete Di2 equipped Scott for £50…built from frame up…. if you are anywhere near Sheffield I can give you his name etc…

  • Learn to do it yourself, that's half the fun of owning a bike, plenty of You Tube stuff out there.

£50 is a good price. I wouldn't pay more than £100. Also it might be a little cheaper if you strip everything down yourself. It will be difficult to screw that up. Like others have said I recommend you do it yourself. If you don't have a torque wrench get one for £40-£50 - not a necessity but if it makes you feel less anxious then get one. Then just mirror what you already have on one bike. I don't have di2 but I gather setting up the gears is a matter of pressing a couple of buttons.

    ^ wot he said...

I work in the 'tech service' world (in my case, guitars). As much as it sucks, we need to charge enough to cover the possibility of your already used equipment being on the verge of breaking (and then us getting blamed for breaking it) etc. etc.

The price for this service can vary wildly! I had my Kinesis assembled from a big box of parts for £45, which I thought was entirely reasonable. I consider it even more reasonable now after it took me the better part of a day to change bars, shifters and cables!
  • When I changed frames the LBS charged me £100 but that also covered a new seat post and bar tape.

Had a new groupset put on an old bike for £55.
I gave a clean rolling chassis to the bike shop; wheels in, bars on, and once more for emphasis; clean and they put the stuff on as I asked. Make sure they know about any little special things you might want; the lever position, the cable routing, the tightness or slackness of the brakes and so on.

I could do it myself but couldn't be bothered, having just put the groupset that came off that bike onto another.
