  • This was written in 1922 and it is interesting to see how some words which I assume were supposed to be very different have become more similar, for example Turk and jerk; finger; linger and singer (depending on where you are in the country); toward and reward; real and zeal...I'm sure there are others. And then there are words which are in transit. Leeches does not rhyme with breeches if it is pronounced britches but it is now commonly pronounced to as if it does rhyme.

    Lit. A small word but it's context other than '..lit a cigar." or similar, has been lost (maybe at the station!).

    'And our fish came down, too.
    He fell into a pot!
    He said, "Do I like this?
    Oh, no! I do not.
    This is not a good game,"
    Said our fish as he lit.'

    Concatenated. That's another good word.
