After copious research for a cx bike under £1000 , I has 90 % settled on the Planet x London road.
Monday evening I had the bike in "my basket " and then when trawling through BR i saw the UKSTAFF20 code in the PX shoes thread , thought why not give it a go , what do you know, code worked now £800 .
But , no bikes available till mid Feb plus build time , given that my bike died a couple of weeks ago I pondered on been without one for a while so I held of pressing the button.
Talked to Px next day told me I could reserve the bike and if I got another one cancel the order (as long as the bike was not built) and they would refund my account.
Happy days, last night configured with mudguards and carbon stem upgrade , use code and "code not applicable".
shit, talked to PX this morning and the code has been removed and they have honored all orders that were processed using it !
I know i was contemplating pushing the button at the original price but I just can not bring myself to do it.
Rose bikes anyone ?

These codes imply they're staff only but this is the second time a 20% staff code has found its way out. I made two orders with one last time around, very odd.

Yes, that must be very annoying.
OK, I'm biased but Rose Pro DX Cross gets my vote - plenty of feedback here http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40114&t=12984831 and http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40012&t=13009501

Then just phone Rose and ask for a test ride.

I would be exactly the same, and have been in the same position.

If I have seen or had an opportunity to purchase a product for a certain amount, and then the following day it has gone up in price, I can't bring myself to buy it - generally, unless it is still a total bargain.

£200 is a LARGE wodge of cash, so I don't blame you.

On the other hand, if you look at what you wrote, the chances are that you would have ended up cancelling the order anyway as you probably had a long wait in order, so I would try and put this behind you and go looking for your new bike.

Rose have a great rep no?

The other way I tend to handle these 'losses' is to spend slightly more than I was originally planning to, but get a better deal than I was originally going to get (not always possible of course) so better spec, lighter etc etc you get the idea.

  • Makes you wonder if they've devalued their own products in the short term with those 20% off codes.
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

Were you able to test ride the Planet X?

I love my Rose reviewed in the 2nd thread above but if you do want a test ride of something else then maybe try a Whyte? Dorset or Suffolk cant remember the model.

Dunno. I have an Apex equipped full carbon XLS sitting behind me. £850.

Agreed, frustrated with himself for not ordering is how I read it.

    Possibly you are right!

Actually, it does illustrate a point. At the moment I'm kitting up for a touring trip so need loads of stuff and I do get fed up with the randomness of pricing. If you want something now then there is the chance that next week it will be cheaper but if you wait til next week it might be unavailable altogether. It's a bit different with the likes of PX where they are the only supplier of their products - you really should go for it straight away then. But the constant variation is tedious.

For example, last year I was going to buy a Garmin 800. Handtec were advertising NOH ones at a very good price. So I watched the site for a couple of months waiting for them to get stock in. Then, without warning, the link vanishes and is replaced by one for the NOH version as a bundle - which I didn't want. I'm not sure even that has yet become. So this year, with 800s getting thin on the ground, I decided to go for an 810. Handtec had those for £216 or a bundle for £270. But I was away the coming weekend and didn't want a GPS unit lying around the PO so decided to wait. At which point the prices increased by about £30 (note - the previous price was NOT marked as being a special sale price). When I asked Handtec why the price had changed and if it would change back, I was told that the retail price had gone up and it might not ever come back down again. Today, the price of the basic unit has come down to £236 and the performance bundle to £280. Still more than it was but far less than it was last week.

In the meantime I ordered the bundle from a German supplier for £265 and feel a bit bad about that. But when they can't keep the prices still for five minutes, what can I do?

I like Ribble but there is no point spending big money for there unless they are doing a special deal - you know one will be along soon so you have the choice of buying now at a significant price penalty or waiting an indefinite amount of time for the inevitable discount to turn up. I don't think this is a good thing.

I have not been able to reply , work has taken down the facility for some me to post on the forum reason .
Anyhow , you have hit the nail on the head I have nothing whatsoever against PX , they have been great on the phone , genuine staff up for a bit of crack and offering good advise.
This is the problem with text , forums etc , some people get the wrong end the stick, disappointed with myself , that's all.
As i mentioned in another thread , popped out at dinner time to LBS , and saw this https://www.ridley-bikes.com/be/en/bike ... isc-1504am .
Has anyone got one , what the sizing like.
Tried a medium felt to big tried a small felt Ok this bike geometry thing is mad , bearing in mind i am 5ft 10 1/2ins.
PS trying a bit of cognitive therapy to get over this and it seems to be working !

Ridleys generally size up big - their road bike small size certainly equates to a medium in most other builds - I'm 5'9 / 10 and rode a small with a 120mm stem
  • At 5'10" then this might be a bit small but have you looked at the Whyte from Edinburgh cycles with upgraded brakes - and only£509 (was £799 rrp with mechanical discs IIRC): http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/product ... -sussex-14

  • Are these 20% discount codes just staff discount?
  • banditvic wrote:

Planet X release them. They did it last year. I think it's a competition between staff to see who can get the most sales on their code. A way to get some quick cash I think.

I could be wrong, but I believe that the UKSTAFF20 discount is working again !
