Is it possible to turn a triple chainset into a double?

FSA SL-K light is the crank in question. Could you remove the 3 chain rings and put a 53/39 set on without the third or would it cause problems? I guess a triple had 130mm bolt holes but even if they were 110mm could the same also be done for a compact instead?

I would move this to the Workshop sub forum, you will probably receive more replies.

Not sure why you'd want to do this but you could just limit the fd to the outer rings. You could then remove the inner ring but you'd hardly save any weight and might look a bit strange. I wouldn't bother changing it, nothing to be embarrassed about!

The FSA SLK Light triple comes as standard with 52/39/30 or 50/39/30 rings in 130/74 bolt hole sizes. It would be simple to take off the little ring and run it as a double and you could also fit after market 130BCD rings down to a minimum of 38. The axle would be slightly wider to accommodate the little ring but I think you will be able to adjust the front derailleur accordingly. The Q factor will be slightly wider and chainline with big ring would not be very good on probably the two biggest cogs on the cassette.
