How many people in this country actually have Sky compared to the number of tv viewers and does the money they generate all come from advertising?

  • There are 25.3m TV subscribing households in the UK - i.e. they have a television licence.
Of those 10.7m subscribe to Sky
    4.5m subscribe to Virgin Media

There are others such as BT vision etc.

Of course having Sky is a quite different matter from subscribing to Sky Sports.

Does anyone remember golf coverage on BBC in the 1970s and 80s?

Probably about 5 cameras to cover the entire 18 holes with fuzzy low definition screens meaning you couldn't see the ball sitting on the tee never mind in the air. Completely pointless and yet people played golf.

The biggest threat to golf is the number of interests and activities open to youngsters these days. There is too much competition. Plus the "upmarket" clubs still have a superiorview over "ordinary" folks. It's not as bad as it used to be but it's still there. There are still men only clubs like Muirfield. Peter Allis doesn't really help with his "home counties" accent and stories of past glory which involve famous players on private and mostly exclusive courses.

Cycling is also taking a large number of would be golfers as they move from the too busy with the kids to having free time as the kids get older. We are constanlty told that healthy exercise require the heart rate to get up. Golf rarely does that (unless you play as badly as I do then its frustration not CV).
