hi

i recently purchased a felt ar series bike

i hope the photographs help show what im talking about

when i run my finger down the non drive side seat stay there is a fairly significant/obvious bump

you can see the sun reflecting off it when looking down the seat stay

no visible outer marks there is a small blob under the lacquer that you can sort of see but im wondering whether its just a join line or normal bump from the manufacturing process orrrr of course the other side which is it could be something more serious?

anybody had any experience with bumps in their carbon frames?

thanks

  • I really wouldn't worry about it, one of mine has a similar size dip in it and it's never given me any trouble

I personally couldn't live with that!
Probably fine structurally, but that would pi$$ me off every time I looked at the bike.
    I'd take it back...

thanks for replies. anybody else to care to share their bump lol

i cant imagine it being anything serious but its annoying me a bit now since ive noticed it

does anybody think there is a chance of it being fractured and repaired.. if it was to have been repaired surely it would be a lot more obvious...
  • I doubt very much it would cause any issues with the frame. Looks like a small imperfection with the carbon sheet, or even a foreign body underneath the lacquer. It will be fine to ride like that, but if it's annoying you then return it. Be prepared to be without a bike for a bit though while they inspect it at Saddleback and decide if it's worth replacing.

sent a ton of photos to saddleback

    they were very helpful

looking at the images you have sent, it is a flaw in the lacquer over the join where the seat stay sockets onto the seat stay yoke. it is certainly only in the lacquer. the join between the seat stay and the yoke is rock solid. it is a cosmetic defect and not structural in any way.

    happy enough

    thanks everyone
