Hi all,

I am planning to ride 247 miles in 24hrs to raise money for a children's cancer charity in March, and have been writing a blog for the planning, build up and ride itself (which can be found here: http://wp.me/p4NbsO-1G).

I would love some feedback and any advise on issues that I may have over looked.

Cheers.

I'm doing something similar though its 200 miles 24k feet climb off-road. Targeting 25 hours.

The biggest challenge we are finding is dealing with the temperature changes day/night etc, given we (or rather I) are carrying everything with us. The other thing is make sure you have really good lights for the overnight part. It fatigues you less if they are bright but not too floody.

Then break it up in to 3rds, try to get ahead in the first 3rd so you can back off a bit in the last 3rd. Other things to look at are things like training on empty to get your body used to running in fat burning mode and looking at options around fueling beyond energy gels and drinks - you simply can't go for that long on the normal cycle fuels IME.

    good luck

I think comfort on the bike is the key. You need to be really happy with your position. What's fine for 6 hours might not work for 12.

Speed shouldnt be an issue - if you take it steady I'm sure you can hit the target before the 24 hours is up. I'd rather do that than pedal slower and take longer.

    Good luck.

Easy enough, just enter a 400km audax.

perhaps do a 200 and a 300 to see how it might go or not.

Just wanted to say a quick thank you to everyone who has read the blog and/or commented on this thread. Really appreciate it.
  • This isn't strictly (or at all actually) related to the 24 hr ride, but a little over a month or so ago I rode Darkmoor - which is a shorter, but hillier version of the DD/EE. It starts and Finishes in Plymouth and goes around and then over Dartmoor. If you are based down in the SW, and this is your sort of thing, then I really recommend it. Below is a link to me experiences riding it:

  • Hi all,

This has gone on a bit of a tangent but I hope you still enjoy, I do however think there is a rule against it:

  • Well my first venture in to the world of marathons finished on Sunday:

Time to see if I can still ride a bike further than 35 miles [emoji6]
  • hi,

I recently dipped my toe in to the muddy world of cyclocross - I know I'm well behind the curve - pretty sure I'm hooked

  • In an attempt to broaden my cycling horizons I had a go at beach racing last weekend. Loved it, well most of it:

Do you ride for 24 hours without sleeping? On roads with cars?

Yeah, people do. Bear in mind in most places there is traffic only 12 hours a day (typically 7 to 7) and hardly a soul on the roads for another 12. Our perception of traffic is due to the fact that we happen to be on the roads during those 12 hours. In more rural places at weekends that window is only from 9 AM to 6 PM, so a mere 9 hours. Riding at night is actually quite pleasant, especially in summer.

Night riding is one thing, but don't get sleep deprivation.
    Each to their own though.

24 hours is not too bad, 48 is a different ball game. Of course I am talking about a bike ride where you stop every 2-3 hours to get some food... if you have to cycle 24 hours without getting off the bike ,that is a different story and probably an acquired taste.
Either way 24 hours without sleeping is hardly sleep deprivation... you don't even get grumpy...

Thanks Fenix. It really is a good race, running up the shingly beach wasn't the most fun I have ever had though :-)

Like ugo.santalucia said, once out of the major conurbations and off the main rat runs the traffic is pretty light even at the busiest times, so after about 9pm you hardly see a soul. We did use a few traffic free cycle routes (like the strawberry line) but this was due to logistics rather than avoiding cars. I think the worst part was once the morning rush started and we had to get used to sharing the road again. :D

    Next blog instalment is up.

A few weeks ago I rode Darkmoor, which is based on the Dun Run - just a lot smaller and much hillier.
