I am right in thinking i can use Stans yellow rim tape instead of normal rim tape on a 700c rim ? i have no plans to go tubeless. Just trying to save some weight.

Apparently Stan's tape is 5 grams a rim. My current Schwalbe tape is 20g a rim.

Is it safe, is 1 layer sufficient ?

OK cheers. i'll try 2. Has anybody tried 1 layer and got away with it ?
  • I used one layer at 60 PSI. May I say that trying to save weight by removing one layer of tape sounds a bit desperate?

just trying to find what works. Why did you use 1 layer if you also say 2 layers ? Maybe you were abit desperate to save some weight as well

Desperate to save some tape, it's expensive! Up to 60 PSI 1 layer is enough, over 60 PSI you want some extra strength

I think Velocity Veloplugs might be a better (or lighter) option. I think they are re-usable and Stan's tape isnt ? Correct ? does Stan's leave a mess when you remove it ?

I had stans tape in my stan rims but hated it and didnt think it fitted well so replaced it with a vittoria band, perfect and much more confident.

whilst on the subject my ultregra 6700 rims didnt look like they need tape so i didnt bother

I use it as a normal rim strip with no issues. Stans themselves say that two layers should be used on road bikes.

Could just drill out your bidons, wear thinner socks, one fewer spoon of cereal at breakfast, spit don't swallow. All these will give you more than 20g saving...

Indeed. But i already do all of those. Im trying to go to the 'next' level. :) All jokes aside, there are much more expensive ways to save weight than spending £7 to loose 30 grams. The people who buy Schmolke,Tune,AX Lightness,Mcfk components. I think they are the real nutters :D

If you want to save a few pennies, the Superstar Components tubeless tape is ok to use as a conventional rim strip. It's not as thick or sticky at the Stans stuff, but it does the job.
  • As an aside, Schwalbe Tubeless tape claims one layer for road pressures. It's held up so far, though I am running tubeless, so YMMV. Comes in at something around 5g a wheel, too.

Schwalbe tubeless products are rebranded Stans, I was told by Schwalbe UK, so....

Thanks for the suggestions, Schwalbe have a number of tapes to choose from http://www.schwalbetires.com/accessories/rim_tape

The first option is quite pricey at £26, is that the same tape you have MisterMuncher ?

Which width would be best for 23mm rims ?

Typically for 23 mm rims you want 21 mm tape

I can only report my experiences and what it says on the box. Also, the tape is blue, not yellow, so I don't think it's the same.

That's the fella all right. I got 25mm cheap from Bike24.de, about 14 quid a roll, laid it in carefully, rolled it in with a cake decorating roller, and trimmed it tight with a scalpel.
