gear cable ferrules with extension bit - what for?

The ferrules which came with some gear cables, there's eight in total. Two have a protruding sheath/extension bit. Where are those designed to go? Thanks.

    You mean end cap with tongue. They are to help seal the inner cable where it enters the outer to stop ingress of debris which could affect shifting performance.

    They are used at the locations shown in the installation instructions, download a copy of DM-ST0002-03.PDF from this page, http://si.shimano.com/

    Under the heading Series, Road, select Ultegra and from that page scroll down to ST-6800, copy the DM-ST0002-03 pdf and go to page 9 and read from there.

    Right, quite a few places. The cables I bought only had two two ferrules with the tongue as that Shimano PDF calls them. So one for each cable. OK thanks.
