Post Fettling Irritation!

Hi All,

Changed the bottom bracket from FSA to Tiagra, changed chainset to Tiagra from FSA Omega, new casstette & chain. New rear gear cables & outers. Serviced front wheel hubs.
I now have an annoying clicking noise! Happens whether I am coasting or pedaling. The noise seems quicker the faster I go.
My next course is to service the rear bearings & freehub, but I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas before I do, as it seemed fine before I changed the drivetrain over.

Thanks

  • Forgot to add, I can't replicate this while it is in the stand, only when I am out on the road.

    Cheers

    Inner tube valve?

Beat me to it. Was what I was thinking could be no.1 cause. Then after that wheel magnet if you have one on.
  • Cheers guys, not that. No magnet & the wheel was fine before tinkering & doesn't make the noise when in the stand (which I assume it would do).

Have you checked if the wheel is true? A broken spoke nipple could be clicking every time the wheel passes over it.

If they're cup and cone hubs, perhaps you've ove tightened the cones?

Have you spun the front wheel on the stand then?
  • Yep, and with the bike upside down on the saddle & bars. :-)

Not sure what rims you have fitted to your Shimano hubs but if they are Mavic Open Pro's then the ticking noise could be due to the spokes losing a bit of tension over time causing slight movement between the nipple and eyelet that results in a ticking noise.

I had that problem about 18 months ago and the details are explained in this thread:-

    viewtopic.php?f=40004&t=12948211&p=18616363#p18616363

I managed to cure the ticking by lubricating all the nipple/eyelet junctions with some Teflon spray but as Ugo stated at the end the real problem lay with a loss of tension in some spokes. After the wheels were serviced and re-tensioned I have not had a repeat of the problem.
  • Hi,
They are the bog standard rims that cam e with the bike (Moda Intro - Barelli branded I think). I did check the spoke tension (acoustically) on both wheels, but there wasn't an awful lot in it. I
t seemed a bit coincidental that the noise wasn't there before I changed the BB, Chainset, Cassette & chain, but was afterwards. I serviced the front hubs as a matter of just trying to eliminate the noise.
I am going to get some new wheels soon anyway, so if it is them, hopefully the problem will be solved! In the meantime, I am just going through all the old standards - seatpost, saddle, pedals, headset etc.

    Cheers anyway!

  • Is it like a ticking sound? Are the bearings packed with grease? If not, it could be a ball bearing falling from the top of the race onto the next one. It might only do it with your weight on the bike.

    FD cable hitting your shoes?
  • Gozzy, It was still happening when I was coasting, although tat has happened to me before!

Wynne, I repacked the front wheel with a load of thicker grease than I used before and it seems to have done the trick! Thanks very much guys!
