Hi all,

Managed to rip my rear mech off the hanger yesterday bending it in half in the process.

The bike is a 2010 Allez Elite with a 105 mech. At the moment there is an ultegra 9sp cassette with 28 teeth. I have ordered a short cage 105 5800 mech, but im thinking ive ordered incorrectly. Would i need the 5701 instead?

Oh, and i'll be needing a new mech hanger too if anyone can point me in the right direction... Found one for £10 on Evans' (i think).

Thanks.

A 5700/5701 series mech will work as, although they're 10 speed, the cable pull ratio is the same as 9 speed. The 5800 mech you have ordered is 11 speed and uses a different cable pull ratio so it won't work with your 9 speed shifters.
  • There are two elements to consider:
Cable pull, which is down to the shifters and speed specific for Shimano and derailleur conversion ratio, which is down to derailleur geometry. Shimano ROAD derailleurs have kept the same geometry for a long time, so all the 9 and 10 speed and interchangeable. I don't know much about Shimano 11 and whether they have kept or changed the derailleur geometry

Also, re. Mech hangers, looking on crc there is a 2.99 clarks hanger, and a 14.99 nsb hanger for a Specialized Allez. Obviously the £3 option is preferable, and they look the same shape. Do you think it would be ok?

Don't know about that Clarks one. Looks a slightly different shape but i don't know how much it matters. Claims to fit "most" bikes, though.
