Hi,

I've signed up for the medium route with a few mates, however I'm not familiar with the area and the GPX file is not available yet and I'd like to go out this weekend and recce out the hardest bits.

Does anybody on here know the area and the route?

Thank you,

None of it is hard*. Not sure which way round it goes. If anti then the drag out of Marlow is quite long. The bits in and out Windsor are flat and very fast.

Here's a route of mine, takes in a fair bit of the route I think: https://www.strava.com/activities/70432576

    *providing you are reasonably fit.

  • The route goes anti-clockwise. The first part from Windsor to Marlow is flat to rolling. There's a climb out the other side of Marlow, it's rated Cat 4 on a Strava segment, the hardest bit and only real hill on the medium route. Then from the top of that hill it's going to get speedy, big downhill then basically flat all the way home. The road out of Henley into Twyford then looping through the Drift Road back to Windsor can be super fast!
  • I think you should be able to download the gpx from my Strava routes - https://www.strava.com/routes/1239078

At the moment the route is provisional, especially at this time of year when we don't know what the weather might be like, we'll publish the final gpx's files the week before the ride when we've done the final check on route conditions.

Overall it's one of our easier rides, it's not completely flat and there a few short sharp climbs but nothing springs to mind that I'd class as hard. It's a new venue for us but I think the terrain lends itself well to a winter event, a chance to get some steady miles in and save the more challenging rides for later in the year.

Could I be cheeky and ask for the same for next weekends ride (long)?
  • Sorry, I don't have the Newbury one, that event is managed by my colleague who isn't really a Strava user, we alternate organising the events throughout the year so we get some weekends off to ride too :-)

Most of our route planning is done on Memory Map but I also like putting the ones I manage on Strava mainly for my own interest before I go out and ride them.

Thanks anyway, fingers crossed for decent weather for both.
  • A sportive through Marlow... is it a good idea? It's as congested as Piccadilly Circus
    left the forum March 2023
  • Someone PM'd me to ask about the route direction, for some reason it won't let me reply to the PM.

The answer to the question is the route goes anti clockwise, you can find a pdf of the map here with direction arrows - http://images.evanscycles.com/uploads/F ... te_Map.pdf

They also asked how congested the parking might be, the racecourse is used to hosting events for several thousand people so we're not expecting any issues with parking congestion.

In response to the question above about Marlow, I've ridden this route several times now and yes the Marlow bridge and high street can be a bit congested but I didn't find it to be a problem on a bike. It's a really short section of the overall route and riders will be relatively spread out by then.
