Hi all

I have come from a very strong background in XC MTB racing and will always ride my MTB (as have spent way too much on it to sell and I will also continue racing).

However, I have decided to buy a road bike and bought a Boardman Road Team Carbon 2014 as I felt it was a good 'starter' road bike for me for the money.

What are the best upgrades I can do to the bike to get the most benefit (preferably as cheap as possible and I know wheels will need doing)

The spec is in the link below and my bike is completely standard.

Your suggestions are most welcome & apols if this is in the wrong section

Thanks
Constantly trying to upgrade my parts. It is a long road ahead as things are so expensive for little gain. n+1 is always the principle in my mind.

  • Nothing mate, just ride it.

You may want to find a saddle that fits you but other than that, nothing.

Get loads of miles on it before deciding to spend money on it. The standard wheels are OK as well btw. My mate runs the same bike and has done nowt bar the saddle.
Trek,,,, too cool for school ,, apparently

To get the most benefit, all you need to do when converting from MTB to a roadie is ...

    Shave your legs.

My Boardman Team Carbon was transformed with a set of Ksyrium Elites. The frame is really good but feels incredible with a stiff pair of wheels to transfer your power down, especially on the climbs.

  • The only "upgrade" needed is a set of Crud Roadracer II's mudguards for the winter. As other's have said, save your money (and then blow it on a £3k bike in a few years and relegate the Boardman to winter use.....).

I have the 2010 boardman as my best bike (build up with 105 11sp, DedaZero100 finishing kit and 50mm carbon clinchers) and it is an absolute dream to ride. Certainly has no trouble keeping up with the S-Works and R5s on my club runs.

I'd say look at brakes (and pads) to ensure good stopping in the wet, and possibly some nicer wheels down the line.

Great looking bike. Is it really good at holding its own with the S-Works?

Any good suggestions for brakes and pads?

Well it is all about the legs! The guy on the supersix evo hi mod is quicker, sadly. I think boardman are highly underrated and if sold by a better regarded shop, would probably sell for more. For your grand, you get a lot of bike.

Depending on what groupset it comes with, get the matching brakes. 105 5700 ones are good enough, I find tecktro are crap. Swissstop Green seem to be well regarded pads.

Brake pads for certain, I'd go for Kool Stop Salmon. Crud mudguards might help. I'd probably leave it there for now but tyres are an excellent upgrade generally speaking. The wheels seem OK.

Yes I have the Tecktro ones now. Not ridden the bike yet due to the rubbish weather but plan to get out on it in the next couple of weeks.
haha i'm not too worried about the legs as they should be there for me but the difference to me racing my 18.5lb HT or my FS to how I will go on this bike will be a strange one.
I just need to familiarise myself with the roadie scene and levels of kit etc.
No shaved legs just yet haha
