Why don't they have a front mech style clamp on MTB trigger shifters?

It would save sliding them on and off, past foam grips and bar ends.

Or it is some high end thing I am missing out on by not upgrading?

    This.

Google "Shimano i Spec", "SRAM Matchmaker" etc and you will find just what you need.

I thought I-spec let you "overlap" brake lever clamps with gear shifter clamps.

They do, or at least it means you mount the shifters to the same clamp as the brake levers instead of having a separate bar clamp for them.

But they are a hinged clamp, so you can fit them without removing the grips etc.

But how often do you have to remove them anyway?

Not very and only when bar ends, grips and brake lever are removed in my case (minus the bar ends of course)

Thats not really what he asked though is it... If you have suitable brakes they lets you combine clamps, but it's not a hinted clamp for a shifter, no matter how you look at it!

Of course, a wrap round clamp with simple pinch bolt is stronger than a hinged and lighter and stronger than a split clamp solution, so which is best very much depends on your priority between strength, weight and convenience.
