Right so, im currently running 1x10 but with a trip to wales coming up in may i want to fit a 40t expander ring to the cassette to help with the hills, will an x9 medium cage mech be fine for this?
Will i need a longer b screw? or should i be fine with this, (currently have a short cage but im pretty sure i cant run 40t on this) hoping i should be fine but just looking for opinions and advice!

I run a Zee Mech (so very short cage) on my FS with no issues, with a normal b-screw. I think it can depend on how much chain growth you get on a FS frame as to whether you can get away with a short cage, but medium should be fine.0

Sweet, I've ordered a medium now anyway so all's good!! Hopefully get it fitted over the weekend if I get chance!!0

As mcnultycop said, it depends entirely on the chain growth. My Mega can't even cope with a short cage and an 11-36 cassette.
Why a 40t and not a 42t?0 -
Don't want such a massive jump that's the main reason!! Just personal preference I guess!0

In my experience the jump isn't that noticable at that end of the cassette as it is where you removed a cog in the middle. For the first few weeks after I fitted an expander I quite often found myself shifting up and down in the middle of the block just because one gear was a tiny bit too easy and the other a tiny bit too hard. Used to it now, but the jump at the top was something I never thought about.0

Should be fine, friends riding with expander 40T cogs are using medium cages. Not sure which expander you've purchased, my Hope one came with a longer B screw which made the whole thing an easy change.0

Was just looking at those for my other bike. Couldn't work out what they meant by "Lots in stock", but then everything said "preorder" when you actually went to select one. Been quite happy with my I/O ring so will probably give their expander a go too (not that I'm not happy with the Hope one I have now).0
