Mixing 8/10speed crackset with 11speed components
Dearest cycling Illuminati,
I have a 2014 Giant Defy 1 which has a 2x10 groupset (Mostly 105)
My question is, can I upgrade to a 2x11 without changing the Shimano R565 crankset?
Similarly a pal of mine has a Cannondale Synapse Claris 2014. Could he upgrade his bike to an 11speed groupset (latest 105) without swapping the 8 speed crankset?
Or is it that the narrower 11speed chain widths would not work on 10/8speed cranksets???
Thank you in advance!
Kind regards,
Alex

I suspect you'll be OK with a 10 speed crank / 11 speed chain & cassette (as long as your rear wheel / freehub will take the 11 speed stuff).
Not so sure about the Claris0 -
Not according to the Shimano specifications, FC-R565 is 10sp compatible only, that is why they have introduced the FC-RS500 which is 11sp. You could try it, but you may experience chain suck with the narrower 11sp chain.
Also as mentioned above you will need an 11sp freehub. If you want to go 11sp you would probably be better buying a complete 105 5800 groupset.
