Crankset query - advice needed

Hi I'm about to upgrade to Ultegra 11 speed groupset, but am tempted to buy an FSA crankset which I've seen heavily discounted, rather than the Ultegra one - its the FSA k-Force Light BB386 Evo as per here:- http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CSFSAKFBB3 ... o-chainset

My query is this crankset is described as 10/11 speed compatible, but a number of other online sites are listing it as 10 speed. I've done a bit of digging and there is a newer version of this crankset out which has been revised (new graphics and apparently improved design on tooth/ramps for 11 speed so am wondering if the one on sale for cheap is indeed really 10 speed and may not be the best solution for me. I did ask Planet-x who just said it def was 10/11 speed compatible but couldnt indicate what the improvements in the newermodel might be or how the lack of those improvements on this model might affect performance.

I prob couldnt tell the difference myself if used a 10 speed or 11 speed specific chainset but I assume if ones are sold as 11 speed then there is a good reason for it. I suppose if not sure then sticking with the ultegra 11 speed is safest option which will definately work - its just the reason behind it is changing to ultegra hollowtek II means I'm having to add new BB sleeve and bracket which is adding more weight than the savings I got upgrading to Ultegra in the first place.

Any advice much appreciated

Is the bike it's going onto BB386? I.e. 30mm axle shell and 86mm shell width? I presume not if you were considering ultegra cranks - then this would make little sense. If you want to deviate from Shimano I think it's hard to look past a Rotor 3D chainset and some Praxis Works rings. 10 speed chain rings on an 11 speed set up will be fine, but they won't shift as well as the ultegra 6800 rings which are phenomenal.

Well both Wiggle and Probikekit have it advertised as 10/11 speed compatible.

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/fsa-k-force-lig ... 60584127uk

    http://www.probikekit.co.uk/bicycle-cra ... lsrc=aw.ds

AFAIK chainsets are pretty unphased by whatever groupset size you are riding - be 9,10 or 11 speed. As long as you are running the correct chain to suit then even a chainset advertised as 10 speed will work fine with an 11 speed set up.

As you state of you have a BB386 bottom bracket then the adaptors needed to run the Ultegra crankset will add a bit more of a complication and a little weight so go ahead and get the FSA.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies...

Ollie my bike (Boardman) is BB30 so i think I just need to add these adapters for shell width spacing http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/BBFSA386AD ... 86-adapter - apparently axle will run on same bearings (which the guy in planet x confirmed also) - just though that was more acceptable than the complete shell adapter plus hollowteck BB.

Arlowood - yes your links are showing the 'newer' model I was speaking of which I am confident is 11 speed compatible, but if you notice my link is to an older generation model and is similar to this one on crc and halfords which explicity syas 10 speed
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/fsa- ... -prod92172
    http://www.halfords.com/cycling/cycling ... o-chainset

might have to consider to Rotor £d's now aswell :-)

Axle can run on the same bearings, they just need to be 're-spaced' if that makes sense - edit (the shell needs to made effectively longer)

I'd go Rotor, would probably be a bit more expensive, but they are fantastic cranks and in my experience using adapters often leads to heightened chance of creaking which can be hideously annoying.
