most torque wrenches for bikes range from 2 - 25 nm, but cassettes and bb30 cranks range from 35-45 nm so do most guess the tightness for these or buy another torque wrench fron 25 to 50nm.

  • 2 wrenches needed for bikes. I used to guess, but not any more. Components are made to finer tolerances these days, and materials can be softer/thinner than they used to be on similar parts - requiring a more accurate tightening torque. I have stripped threads on cranks and broken seat clamps thinking that it would be ok by hand, as I had done it that way for years without problem.

I bought a big torque wrench from Lidl for £15. I don't expect it to be that accurate but it should be pretty precise and it's certainly a decent enough object and has done the job over the last few years. Cassettes won't be accurately torqued anyway whatever wrench you use due to the toothed surface of the lock ring.
