hub/freehub or something briefly failing to engage

Shimano 8 speed, rear hub RX100. After a brief bit of freewheeling, when I start to pedal, it fails to engage for half a second or so, for half or a whole pedal revolution. Not always. But quite often. There's no unpleasant sound -- it happens very smoothly and quietly. Just for a brief moment it fails to engage, apply any pressure, so my legs spin round unimpeded. Then it engages, belatedly. It's not the chain skipping on anything I don't think. A little while ago I had the freehub off and washed it out with WD40, left it to dry, then put loads of oil in. While I had the freehub off I couldn't feel anything wrong when spinning it etc. Always engaged solidly and immediately when spinning it one way. What's the problem does anyone think? And how can I fix it? Thanks.

Sticky/knackered freehub - if cleaning / dunking in oil doesn't fix it, then time for a replacement - Shimano freehubs aren't readily user serviceable
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Right, OK, thanks, that's what I feared.
