Hi there.

I'm new to mountain biking, I had purchased a cheap Halfords MTB as a basic commuter but now looking at something a lot better as I now know it's something really enjoy. The Halfords bike has been refunded in full.

I've been to two local bike shops today, I explained the primary use is commuting with occasional propper off road use at the weekends (my journey to work is about 5 miles 70% road/paved and 30% trail).Although, I want to start off by using the bike school at Cannock Chase.

Hydraulic brakes are essential so I can transport the bike to better riding locations.

My budget is £500-600.

The first shop had advised this bike, that they had on display:
£549 - Scott Aspect 940 (from looking at pictures online, looks to me like the 2013 model, dark grey frame with greeny yellowish decals)
- Looked like this: http://www.scott-sports.com/us/en/produ ... ect-940-l/

Latest model - http://www.scott-sports.com/us/en/produ ... -940-Bike/

Another shop I went to nailed it down to two bikes:

[*]£600 - Trek X-Caliber 7 2015 - http://www.trekbikes.com/uk/en/bikes/mo ... caliber_7/

[*]£549 - Merida big nine 100 2015 - http://2014.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bik ... -2113.html

At the moment the bike I like the most is the Trek.

Although, out of the two shops I had preference for the first - very small repair specialist, only 3 members of staff. I had a bad experience with the build quality of the Halfords bike and feel confident they will do a high quality build. They even advised me against spending silly amounts of money due to my limited riding experience.

The second shop was still a specialist, but a lot larger with younger staff. They had a better sales pitch but I feel it was more about selling the bikes than doing quality repairs. Although they were honest with some higher prices bikes saying some are slightly more expensive due to the popularity of the brands, e.g. Giant.
